Measuring Marketing Honestly in a Long Sales Cycle

NS Legal and Corporate Services · 9 May 2026 · 6 min read

Marketing measurement designed for fast transactional purchases translates poorly to professional services, where a decision may involve several people over several months. Click-through and last-click attribution both understate the activity that shaped the decision earliest.

A more useful approach starts by defining the qualified enquiry precisely. Agreeing what counts — and what does not — prevents reporting that celebrates volume while the business sees no change in its pipeline.

Second, measure at the stage where marketing genuinely influences the outcome. Enquiry quality, meeting conversion and time from first contact to meeting all say more than impressions.

Third, accept that attribution will be partial. A prospect who reads three articles, sees a colleague's recommendation and then searches for the firm by name will be recorded as a direct visit. Treating branded search volume as an outcome rather than a source corrects for some of that distortion.

The objective is not perfect attribution. It is a measurement framework consistent enough that budget can be moved towards what is demonstrably contributing.
